The Layers of the Earth: A Journey to the Center
The Earth is like a cosmic onion, composed of several distinct layers, each with unique properties and characteristics. From the surface we walk on to the fiery core at the planet's heart, these layers are crucial to understanding our world's geology and magnetic field.

1. The Crust
This is the outermost layer, the thin shell we live on. It's made of solid rock and is divided into two types: the continental crust (forming the continents) and the oceanic crust (under the oceans). The crust is relatively thin—averaging about 40 kilometers (25 miles) thick—and is the coolest and most brittle of Earth's layers.

2. The Mantle
Beneath the crust lies the mantle, a thick layer of hot, solid rock that extends about 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) deep. The mantle is not entirely solid; it behaves like a viscous fluid over long periods, allowing for the slow movement of tectonic plates. This movement is responsible for earthquakes, volcanic activity, and the creation of mountains.

3. The Core
At the center of the Earth is the core, divided into two parts:
Outer Core: A liquid layer composed mainly of iron and nickel. The motion of this molten metal generates Earth's magnetic field, which protects us from harmful solar radiation.
Inner Core: Despite incredibly high temperatures, the inner core is solid due to immense pressure. It's a dense ball of iron and nickel, with temperatures reaching over 5,000°C (9,000°F).

Together, these layers form a dynamic system that shapes our planet's surface, climate, and very existence.
