I had an Indian teacher
who wore deep green eyes to lecture
she liked to look at the future
from high behind her desk

one day, the window was open
and to the roar of the ocean
she sang a story of motion
the song of jumping mouse

the song of jum jum jumping mouse
the song of jum jum jump
the song of jum jum jumping mouse
the song of jum jum jump

well, this mouse was one among many
who lived with plenty of plenty
soft nest and summer sun berry
kept every mouse in his bed

but jumping mouse was heard saying
“this tasty life is too pleasing”
so, by the river, while bathing
he’d jump to look where it led.

one day, the river was raging
and up he jumped with such straining
that the wind came on with the raining
and dropped him in for a ride

two hours later he made it
every prayer he had known,
he’d prayed it
“Go on!” he heard, and obeyed it
while wiping sand from his eye

the new beach was beautiful as a baby
so chock full of summer sun berries
“I could stay longer, but maybe
there’s something more, so bye bye”
