Refractive started as a birthday present for my friend Gus. We'd known each other for 21 years at the time, in October of last year and I thought I'd put together sort of an anthology of all the music we listened to. My brief was 'Tony MacAlpine with a seven string', and I just started writing. It was the first track I finished, and shortly after I sent him a demo version, the idea came to my head that this EP was what I wanted to do, and Bioplan was born.
One thing you may not know about 'Refractive' is that the opening synthesizer melody, actually runs throughout the entire song, on a loop, unbroken. It's quieter in some places, louder in others, but it's always there. It's the heartbeat of the song and dictated things like chord progressions, changes and so on. It also relates quite closely to the melody which opens the EP, helpful if you're on repeat.
BIOPLAN is the synthesizer and electric guitar mashup brainchild of Swedish multi-instrumentalist Andi Kravljaca. Bioplan’s music mixes the atmospheric tonality and glowing neon soundscapes of 1980s synthwave, with the brutality and gated precision of modern seven string guitar.
