As you lose grip humanity slowly leaves you. It starts the same way as any infection, an abrasion, an irritant. You'll ignore them for the same reason you ignore everything, you're weak. Too far removed from the light and the misery you've massaged into your skin is a nightly feast for the devils you insist on carrying. Eventually your final piece of happiness is stolen in your sleep. You devolve into and become your demons, you understand the monsters your formerly feared. The tragedy, your pathetic inability to mourn your final moments as a person who recognizes beauty.
