Government, like all other abstract political axioms, exists as a locus of intersections between dynamic structural terms; and because government is itself a dynamic term, if we are to define it correctly, the cultural interpretation of its defining terms ought to be directly influential towards said culture’s understanding of government. Perhaps the easiest way to define government would be to posit that it exists at the ideological intersection of a populace and its needs: a government is the mechanism by which a socialized group of individuals distributes resources among itself according to demand— a model which reveals several compelling sociological insights. For example, the individual needs no government, as they are freely able to distribute resources unto themselves without need of systematic involvement. Further still, there are other types of socialized groups than a nation: a family, for example, can be said to have a governance, as each one will have a set of rules, whether implicit or explicit, which dictate its proper distribution of resources. These rules, of course, when extrapolated back out to the scope of a society or a nation, become classifiable as ideological elements, and are the building blocks upon which a government is run; but governments are more than simple ideological building blocks. This is where we introduce the second intersection: The spacial intersection between remoteness and omnipresence. While this seems like a contradiction, it is nonetheless true of most governments, which are obliged to locate themselves at a finite number of points, in a finite number of buildings, yet whose presence is felt nearly equally (or such is the ideal a government attempts to uphold) throughout its claimed territory. For example, even though the capital of Senegal is in Dakar, a woman in Kaolack does not live any less under the power of the Senegalese government, even though she finds herself located nearly 200 kilometers away from her capitol building. Government also locates itself at the intersection of the human and the divine. A government must be fallible, accountable to its citizens and subjects, comprised of humans who must personally live out the consequences of its edicts, etc.; but it must also be infallible, unchangeable, unquestionable, it must be founded on a certain pessimistic realism that its current arrangement is the best possible one, it must be ready to defend its legitimacy by force unto its citizens, comprised of godlike, pedestal-bound saints. Government must be accessible, yet inaccessible. Transparent, yet esoteric. Yours, yet mine. Good, yet evil. Light! Eternal Light! Let there be music! Let you rejoice! To government be the glory! YES! YES! YES!
