Serotonin from Orange Sun by Craig Redpath
I’d been in band for about 5/6 years, and it got to a stage where logistically we just couldn’t get together as much as we used to to practice or even see each other really. This was a really low point in music for me, and I was just miserable for months, which I’ve found out is what happens to me if I go long periods without doing much with my music. So I realised around this time that I would be best, even if short term, having a pop at being a solo artist (i'd only ever known being in a band before this). As I started writing music with this in mind, I instantly felt this sense of invigoration. Perhaps because it was something new, but also I was the only person responsible for me and my music. Serotonin was the first song I'd written after making this decision, and it's exactly what the songs about. It goes through the feelings of trying to re-find my love and joy for music, to trusting the process moving forward and attacking this new adventure with a very 'what will be will be' attitude. Recording this song was a class experience. I was in the studio with my manager and we had intended on putting a couple of tracks down in this one session, but Serotonin just seemed to go into this spiralling, wonderful direction that we weren't ready for. I remember once we got the engineer Lyndon on the keys, it just took this beautiful, spellbinding sort of form, and we spent that whole session, probably about 6/7 hours, on this track. When thinking about the track order for the EP, I knew pretty much straight away that I wanted this song to close the record. I think it would've been easier and more predictable to go with a 'bigger' track like Orange Sun or Angels, but I feel the sentiment and vibe of this track brings the EP to a perfect clause. I like the idea that a song about moving into his new world concludes the record.
