If his slapdash growth into manhood were somehow a series of badges stitched into a boy scout sash, he was aware that only a few had been put there by his dad. Baiting-a-Hook, that was one. Stick-to-your-Brand was another. And maybe even his badge for Knowing-What-and-When-to-Tell-Things-to-your-Woman had been earned, unaware, through his dad’s early example. But what do any of us know about how we came to be who we are?

He was content to know that the shadow his father cast on his life was a warm one, and a well-intentioned one, even if brief.
