"Diphosgene was used in World War I as a chemical weapon, deployed in artillery shells to deliver toxic vapours that convert to phosgene, causing severe respiratory damage like pulmonary edema and leading to death.
Diphosgene was developed because the vapours could destroy the filters of the gas masks in use at the time."
