where’s the boy you said that you would wait for
that dropped his anchor the second he saw land
and where’s the girl he dreamt up just to have her
i bet your eyes look like hers behind your hands

i guess he gave up on being landlocked
and she stopped caring if the tide came in
he set sail for anywhere but right here
her little lighthouse on the rocks and on the mend

when did you get pictures of the people
some time ago we once set out to be
before we spent our mornings saying nothing
sorting through belongings like debris

and i’m not saying let’s forget the worst things
or act like we can make it if we try
but i think we might be worried about the shipwreck
as if we shouldn’t care that we survived

where’s the boy you said you’d learn to love for
i wonder if he still exists at all
or if the girl that he flew his white flag for
knows that her tears hit like cannonballs

i guess he gave up on charted waters
around the time that she turned off the light
it’s hard to say what would’ve been different
if his heart hadn’t washed ashore that night

do you look back and think about the people
we swore we would never start to be
back when we could sit and talk forever
back when all these pictures weren’t debris

and i’m not saying let’s pretend we’re perfect
or act like this will fix itself in time
i’m just saying we’re more than a shipwreck
we’re the only thing that survived
