Lyrics
Waiting for a bus upstate
In the evening twilight
I put my suitcase down again
But for the first time
Ticket booth attendant
Impatient and rude
“The bus will get here when it got here
don’t ask me again so soon”
Am I just confused?
Everybody keeps saying
That I’ve been here before
I saw myself sitting on the bench
In the bathroom mirror
I’m not some kind of kook
There’s no trouble in my mind
I stole my own place on the bus,
With a mischievous side eye
“If you know what I mean”
An older woman said
As she twirled her finger
Around the side of her head
“She’s got a leak in her attic,
Maybe a couple screws loose”
they said as the cops took me away
But I already left for Syracuse
The neon golden ladies sign
Is misleading in its name
As it hangs over the entryway
To mirror parallel planes
Each of us has a counterpart
And when the planes converge
Your chiral double, to survive
Must replace us in this world
“This place is like a tomb
Between now and morning”
But you decide to stay and wait
As the attendant starts snoring
Sip a drink from the water fountain
Place your suitcase on the floor
Gone when you look back up
See yourself walk out the door
Everybody keeps saying
That you’ve been here before
You saw yourself leave the station
In the bathroom mirror
Are you some sort of kook
Is there trouble in your mind?
You stole your own place in your life
in the morning twilight
Obscure metaphysical explanation
to cover a phenomena so framed
reasons dredged out of the shadows
to explain away
That which cannot be explained
