i know of a certain film
that preserves the images of many animals
recording, as it were, their private moments
in the din of the woods

projected onto a wall
these ghostly shapes revivify
like flowers in a vase
curiously blurring taxonomic distinctions

i saw trees twist into horse-like figures
spectralized beasts inhabiting all earthly fissures

as it happens animal behaviors bear out our presumptions
allowing toxic assumptions to inhere in our bodies

and speaking of consumption
the filmstrip winding through the sprocket contains many secrets
such as a silver halide compound suspended in a generous coating of animal gelatin

nothing goes to waste
