June 16, 1976, marks the massacre of the black Soweto children by the South African police. The South African officials put the death toll at 600. Winne Mandela and others said well over 1,00 were killed some under 12 years old.

In 1985, Piet Botha declared a state of emergency in South Africa, detaining more than 22,000 people. More than 8,000 were children, never to be seen, never to be seen by their families again.
