Year One by Jim Clark

Here's a collection of some of my favorite songs that I've made during my first year of recording music. Included are a few unreleased tracks that didn't make any album and one song that marks my vocal debut (from a lyric that I wrote nearly 25 years ago) that will likely be on my next release.

As for those three "new" songs...

I originally recorded "Running" for my first album and then had it slotted into the tracklisting for my second (though it was never considered for What You Know Might Kill You). There's something that I felt that I never got right with this song, which is why it's stayed unreleased. Anyhow, though it's not a favorite of mine, I thought I'd let it see the light of day.

I had a jazz interlude on my debut album and thought I'd carry on that tradition on every release, starting with "Another Jazz Interlude." I wrote this for Descension, but felt it didn't fit in with the rest of that album, so I pulled it, effectively killing my "jazz song per album" idea.

"Hush" is the oldest song that I have ever written - with lyrics and accompanying music from June of 1994! For whatever reason, the words and music always stuck with me. The first two minutes of the song are more or less what I envisioned 25 years ago while the rest of the music is new. Lyrically, it's not something I'd write today, but I felt that I owed it to my 20-year-old self to finally record it. And as it stands, "Hush" will likely lead off my next album, whenever that may be.
