Guilt is an emotional experience that occurs when a person believes or realizes - rightly or wrongly - that they have compromised their own standards of behavior or violated universal moral standards and bears significant responsibility for that violation. Feelings of guilt can lead to virtuous behavior. People who feel guilty may be more likely to exercise restraint, avoid self-indulgence, and show less prejudice. Guilt seems to induce corrective behavior in order to alleviate the negative emotions it generates. It seems that people exhibit purposeful and concrete reparative behavior towards those they have hurt or offended.
