Petrichor by Louise de Lune

Petrichor is a word for the smell of rain when it hits the ground. Petros is
Greek for rock, so specifically, it´s the smell of rain on rocks that I imagine to be storing heat from the sunlight. I picked this name because it describes a concept that we don´t usually talk about much and I thought that´s nice.

But through the process of thinking and re-thinking the release of this album, which I have procrastinated for a good 5 years now, I realized there is another aspect. Most people don´t know the word Petrichor, so they aren´t aware that this particular phenomenon can have a name to refer to it with and hence can be talked about. So, music itself is a way of expressing things we don´t have a name or even words for. It gives a framework to convey emotions and ideas, and we may even all be referring to different things when we think of the feeling a song evokes, but it still has meaning for each of us, The act of creating music is often one of slowly realizing what you are actually experiencing and feeling by giving it a space, a shape and a name to exist.


Another aspect, and this comes more from activism and navigating how I see the world as a 30something year old, applies to all lived moments in general. Things we experience but have no name for. Finding a name for them is extremely powerful and necessary in order to start thinking and working ourselves out of them or actively adopting them into our life
philosophy. Who you feel attracted to doesn´t need a name in a setting
where love interests can be anyone. But in a hetero-normative society that sets standards only for hetero constellations, the marginalization of all other types of love (and gender, for that matter) can only become visible if you give them a name to refer to them with. Any systemic power imbalance only becomes visible if we give the problem that we talk about a name, allowing it to identify its structural nature; then we all know it´s not a singular occurrence and can think about how to deal with it. Giving a name to things allows them to exist and be thought about, I think it´s one of the most beautiful things about learning other languages too; you discover words for things you didn´t know had a name. That´s why I am happy a smell-of-rain-on-rocks-in-the-air-and-the-prospect-of-rain-outside will (involuntarily) lend its name to this collection of songs. I hope you enjoy.

Louise de Lune is a musician and producer based in Spain. Her multilingual performances are characterized by soulful guitar playing and clear vocals. Her sound is particularly known for its carefully woven harmonies. Alongside of performing as a jazz vocalist and after playing in numerous bands she is now focussing on her solo project and producing her first Album.
