Quiet! Focus... by Making Out

This project hasn't gone as planned. It's interesting to look back on what I was trying to do, all that's happened since, what was happening at the time, where I was coming from, and what the record seems to be about in retrospect.

I was going to do this record "properly" - seek label support etc - but a while ago I felt the practice moving, felt interests shifting, and felt this urge to just get it out before it lost relevance, then this Nov-Dec tour happened (thank you Marlene and Tone List) and the practice has grown and changed some more. More reason to get it out. Procrastinating through perfectionism, again.

The music here was recorded across May 30 and June 1 2025. I guess it was a check in on the goals of the Making Out practice as they looked at that time. Embodiment is a key part of the practice; the interest in stamina started off as a way of bringing the embodiment of a band like HYMMNN into noise performance, but it’s changed a lot since then and embodiment, discipline, patience have become goals in themselves.

Willingness and challenge to live in single sounds or sound worlds for extended periods. Spending a lot of time with the complexity of single sounds or simple contrasts.

As I rehearsed for these recording sessions, I noticed other interests converging. Disparate sounds I’ve picked up relationships to over the years, without necessarily understanding why. AM/FM radio static, which I noticed I loved when I worked in a hifi shop. The sounds of cooking, of being outside, of parties. The beautiful sounds of Canberra on Ngunnawal/Ngambri country. Unison voices, the bodily sensation of singing in unison. Sine waves and acoustic beating. These interests are coming together here, collaged (improvised) against each other without a lot of forethought.

Thank you so much to Ethan, Nick, and Josh at Blackwattle Studios. The process of making these recordings was fun and slow and gentle which is so often not the way with recording. So fun to get nerdy and expansive with tools and sounds.

This work was performed and recorded May 31-June 1, 2025, on the unceded land of the Ngunnawal and Ngambri people. Source field recordings were taken on this same land.
