Malombra by Malombra

Come la pulsione febbrile e visionaria abbia potuto sopperire ad una così assoluta povertà di mezzi resta tutt'oggi un mistero. Eppure da subito si evidenziò l'unicità della fiaba macabra denominata Malombra.
Stilisticamente omaggiante l'effimera stagione in cui la psichedelia inglese iniziava le sue metamorfosi in Prog, Hard e Glam e quant'altro, ma idealmente fermo a un'infanzia sequestrata da incubi cinematici fin troppo caserecci, Malombra è considerato oggi un bizzarro caposaldo del filone che si definisce Italian Dark Sound.
Tra rimandi alla più classica tradizione gotico-romantica, cupe vertigini paranoici, fughe oniriche attraverso selve di simboli e rimandi psicomagici, ma il tutto in un contesto di precarietà che rimanda molto al primo punk, l'esordio di Malombra resta a tutt'oggi un unicum nel "lato oscuro" della musica alternativa italiana.

How feverish, visionary drive managed to compensate for such an absolute lack of resources remains a mystery to this day.
And yet, from the very beginning, the uniqueness of the macabre fairytale known as Malombra stood out.
Stylistically, it pays tribute to that fleeting season when British psychedelia began its metamorphosis into Prog, Hard Rock, Glam and beyond — yet conceptually, it remains anchored to a childhood seized by homegrown cinematic nightmares.
Today, Malombra is regarded as a bizarre cornerstone of the movement now known as the Italian Dark Sound.
With nods to the classic gothic-romantic tradition, haunted by paranoid vertigo, dreamlike escapes through forests of symbols and psychomagical references — all framed within a fragile, lo-fi aesthetic that evokes early punk — Malombra’s debut still stands as a true unicum in the “dark side” of Italian alternative music.

Malombra was born in Genoa in 1991, is classified as Dark Prog Rock. Founded by Mercy, their sound blends Doom Metal, Dark Wave and Prog. The name is inspired by Fogazzaro’s decadent novel. Albums like Malombra-1993, Our Lady of the Bones-1996, and TRES-2023, released by Black Widow Records, evoke gothic and mysterious atmospheres, earning a cult following among fans of the true Italian dark sound
