Montpelier Man from Rebel Sentry by Mike Warren

Montpelier Man showed up when the town was boarded shut with white skulls and crossbones on the walls. Drawn blinds with peeky eyes who dared not to jeopardize the cold, fragile safety of their homes.
Lone traveller headed down the road, 'till he found a camp of patients afflicted by the weight of being shunned. Sign said "You're welcome but you won't stay long"
The patients all heard the bell that echoed through the church that only candelights and incence filled, a frightened monk prayed, "God please let this cup pass away from me."
A local merchant spied from behind his curtains while the stranger cleaned bandages and wounds. He pondered with his dog at his side how this man could risk his life to save such cursed fools. The sight hit the merchant real hard. The kind of hard that could break you, the kind of hard that could cause you to dig a little deeper within your heart.
The stranger he finally fell ill with no one to clean his wounds, no one to bring a meal until, a loyal dog brought some bread and licked his poor sores away.
A frightened monk he spied from behind his curtains while the stranger and dog became a team. Half well yet focussed still they gave all their heart and will to save all they could by humble means. The sight hit the monk real hard. It was the kind of faith he envied, the kind of faith he'd want next time, but "next time"'s and empty wish when you pray that chance never comes back.
Montpelier Man they say went back from whence he came with his new companion at his side.
With tears of shame and pride the merchant waved goodbye to his loyal dog who obeyed his last command, "Always stay by the side of the Montpelier Man."
