This Friendship from Before Seventeen by Nicholas Wells
“This Friendship” came in October of 2003. We were fifteen, and my friends were my lifelines. In one way or another, we were all in the trenches, fighting our own battles, but fighting them together. Through so much of the darkness that I felt, I would see a spark of light each time we’d pass each other in the hallways in school, sharing a high five, a hug, or just contributing something stupid to some ongoing joke between all of us. That spark turned into a full on bonfire through all of Friday and Saturday nights, when a big group of us would end up at someone’s house, or we’d find ourselves out under the street lights at 3:00am, trying to figure out what this life was all about. We knew what the good stuff was, and we tried to live it. I can, with certainty, say that my friendships shaped me into who I am today. It would take me a novel to summarize the adventures we shared and the bonds that grew, but I can assure you: it was magic.
21 years or so after writing the song, a number of us are still very close. I want to say though, that if you’re reading this, and you and I spent time together in 2003 when we were fifteen, this song was and is for you. I really am truly sorry that for one reason or another life came between some of us. It took me a long time to figure myself out, and to learn some things I needed to. If reading this so inspires you, I would absolutely welcome a message from you any time. And if I don’t get to tell you personally, just please know that our days together still mean the world to me. Thanks for everything.
The final, softer verse, at the end of this song, I ended up using entirely as my yearbook quote for senior year two years later.
