Other than the immortal moment of Jeb Bush’s defining humiliation, the strings are from Phillip Glass’ score to Paul Schrader’s film “Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters”, specifically the piece “1937: Saint Sebastian”. It is performed by the Kronos Quartet. The piece accompanies Yukio Mishima’s realization, as a young teen, that he has homosexual feelings after being aroused by a depiction of a naked Saint Sebastian being pierced by arrows.

Yukio Mishima was a great author of Japanese fiction, and he also attempted a coup of the Japanese armed forces and committed seppuku when he failed. This happened in the 1970s. This would be like if Margaret Atwood attempted a coup. Post-War Japan: There Are Some Problems.
