In addition to having themes of autumn and "home," I also wanted to include four tracks in this collection that represent the four elements—another theme I seem to be preoccupied with, as of late.
I see these short sound interludes as palette cleansers that usher in different sections of the collection, slowing things down, offering a moment to breath and, at times, signaling a change of tone.
For whatever reason, in recent years—perhaps it’s the exponential busyness of our modern, internet-driven world—I’m experiencing an overwhelming desire/need for less to be happening in music—a break from the relentlessness of drums/beat, too many layers, crammed notes in rapid succession, and constant singing.
Living in the city for ten+ years now, and missing the woods of my east-coast birthplace, I think my fixation with these elements is my spirit calling out for more nature.
When I think of earth and water, my first thoughts are of the rocky hillsides and rivers of Patapsco Valley State Park and historical Ellicott City. When I think of air blown across a glass bottleneck I think of all the antique bottles along the shelves of the antique shops I’ve frequented, as well as those I found in/near old barns and shacks in the woods I explored in my childhood.
Two of the tracks are direct samples of the elements and two are representational. In order of appearance they are: Fire, Stones (earth), Bottle (air), and River.
Here, the listener crosses the "river" into the last quarter of the collection.
