Lyrics
In terms of this movie I tried to watch
which I guess was Infinity War?
it wasn’t just the badness of the…
it wasn’t just
I don’t know, the way the images were looking
the—
You know I do like some superhero stuff.
I was ready to just watch it as like
a dumb action movie
and try and enjoy
the costumes and the actors
The dialog was so full
of these
quasi-ironic
like
sort of
meta-fictional
jokes
Where like all these asides
between the characters were there
— how do I put this —
it’s not just that they weren’t clever
it’s that
it was like one joke after another of
like
Ha ha
the character
is becoming
self-aware
making a little joke
about
the nature of themselves
as a character
and the relationship between
another character—
There was a series of exchanges about
like
Ben & Jerry’s ice cream
Ironman comments that
what is it he says?
Somethink like
i didn’t like dairy
until
ben & jerry’s named
a flavor after me
and then somebody else says something about
how the whole flavor
and then the whole group goes like
is that a thing?
and it went on for a while
and it happenned in the middle of
what was supposed to be
like a suspensful action thing
so they don’t really have time
for what they’re doing
you know?
And you can kinda tell
that the director intended that
it was supposed to be like
that scene in Pulp Fiction where they’re
about to give Uma Thurman
the shot of adrenaline —
— you can feel like
they’re trying to do something like that
in this Marvel movie
but, like, it’s
they’re NOT doing it…
In order to appreciate it
you have to have an attitude, I think
towards the movie
that basicallly is
some weird intersection
between
suspending disbelief
and
not
at all
in any way
suspending disbelief
Like you think the entire thing is a joke to begin with
and yet
you still
somehow like it
Not a joke: like you think the entire thing is bullshit to begin with
and yet
you still
supposed to somehow like it
I don’t see how
someone can be laughing along with those jokes
and still be caught up
in the illusion of the movie
and care what happens
I feel like
it has to kind of
go one way or another
(and
as I’m saying this
I feel
there must be a bunch of movies
that I’ve enjoyed at both levels
and I don’t know
maybe I don’t get the superhero stuff
— the genre)
(but I thought I did)
