In the UK at the time, it was very fashionable to be an 'art school band'. I (mistakenly) thought that by naming our band Art Brut, that we would not be lumped in with those other bands, that we would stand apart. Our name meant that we didn't go to art school, that embodied the very definition of outsider art. We were punks!
