American sound weaver Stokes is one of the U.S. ' best-kept secrets. Taking its cue from a wide swath of electronic mavens new and old (Tangerine Dream, Orb, Geir Jennsen's Biosphere, IDM), Stokes' brand of ambient dub recalls some of the artists on the late, great British Beyond label. This is due mainly to his use of squishy synth effects, molten-thick bubbling beat patterns, and alien landscapes. His highly individualistic approach suggests that Stokes is a master craftsman whose abilities are near bottomless in their depth.
