THRENODY by REALITY

Since 2023, REALITY has explored two parallel creative channels: the ecstatic drone, minimalism, and meditative repetition of one world, and the pulverising breakdowns of hardcore, metal, and powerviolence of another. For Clift, these opposing forces form a cathartic, near-spiritual continuum driven by repetition, ecstasy, and euphoric release. Recorded in Autumn 2024 during a period of bereavement, MARA captures a 25-minute free-play session on open-tuned guitar—the first sound to emerge after loss—later met by Thea Grant’s improvised vocals and mixed by Misha Hering at Holy Mountain, Hackney. The result is both confrontational and consolatory: monolithic, echo-drenched guitar layers forming a tidal, hymnal foundation for Grant’s ethereal sound design, producing a cathedral-scale threnody where wordless voice and feedback render love and loss in stark monochrome. Earlier works SCAPEGOAT and PULE (2023), recorded between Huddersfield and Bradford with Christopher Duffin (Xam Duo, James Holden) on saxophone and newly remastered by Hering, extend this dialogue of searing riffs and explosive improvisation—captured in single takes with no preparation, a raw communion that has since carried REALITY to stages alongside The Body, Dis Fig, Demdike Stare, and Nik Colk Void.
