Ingxunguphalo from Cadiz by Chris Orton and Sören Sieg

Ingxunguphalo means The Great Sorrow. I wrote this piece in 2015 when my father was dying, one of the saddest times of my life. It was the second movement of my African Suite No. 16 Inxaxheba, commissioned by the Flanders Recorder Quartet, who recorded the piece with Saskia Coolen for their album ‚Five’. Ingxunguphalo has been played in various instrumentations at funerals around the world. There is a beautiful recording of the version for violoncello solo and string orchestra by the Philadelphia Sinfonia. This is the version I wrote for Chris and me.

Sören Sieg learned 7 instruments, published 200 columns, 13 books, 11 theater plays and countless musical works that were premiered on five continents. For 18 years he toured with his a cappella group LaLeLu. He lives as a freelance composer, editor, pianist author, and playwright in Hamburg and Warsaw. This year his first symphonic works premiered in Spain and Switzerland.
