In the grey day beneath wide clouds,
With kiss of frost and bite of thorn
The only things to touch my skin
Since my rst step in the morn.

Alone I walked. Alone I sang
Songs forgotten and unknown;
Red eyes fixed upon my back.
Red sign fixed upon the road.

Wet blood marked the winding way
From lonely wood unto the bygone graves.

I felt its eyes, its piercing glare,
Staring from I knew not where.
I did not see it in the trees
Nor did I hear it walking there.

Dread breathed ice upon my neck.
Each step as thunder in my ear.
The fall of leaves like heavy rain.
The slightest sound stirred my fear.

I dare not turn the way I came,
All afraid of what I fled.
But lo' I wondered soon enough
Was I chased or was I led?
