Funky Forest by Tan00ki (George-Paul Henneberke)

Title screen
Hi all, and if you’re reading this, it’s fair to assume that you are, have or will be listening to the Greenwood album, Funky Forest….and that’s really cool and for that I’m truly grateful.
Who am I?
Sorry, so rude! My name is George-Paul Henneberke and I wrote the music for this album. Play guitar on it and have programmed some keys, horns etc…….but let it be clear it couldn’t have
become the album it is without the awesome musicians:
Desmond Kuijk (Bass)
Frank Hondenbrink (Drums) and Maurits Boegman who plays keys on a few tracks and initially came with the idea for the track “Oh Alf!”
Backstory
So, let me tell you something about this album and how it came to fruition.
A few years ago me and Frank played in a band together. After a while this band decided to quit and we all punched each others face in, as one does when breaking up musically (just joking, we still buds). Anyway, later on,
Frank and me talked that it would be fun to make some music again.
I told Frank that I would love to do a funky, gamey, rocky, fusioneeeey type album. He jumped around, and knowing the guy, that means he’s on board. Funky, Gamey, Rocky and Fusioney……..that was the mix and so I pulled inspiration from Nintendo games (Nes, Snes and N64), hits from the 80’s, but als bands like The Peppers (you
know, the red hot ones), Vulfpeck (LOVE), Rage Against the Machine, Casiopea, Mezzoforte (LOVE) and a lot more.
Time to get to work.
Logic Pro X fired up, guitars ready, writing tracks! AWESOME!
But, this ment programming drums, me adding bass like a guitarist and programming a lot of Gamey synths and pads. Good enough for a demo, but from the start it was clear that Frank would be provide real drums. So he was off practicing the demo’s, leading up to us rehearsing and immediately missing bass.
“Desmond, you slappa da bass?”
“Eeeeh, well, sometimes but mostly……”
“Cool story bro, get to the rehearsal space”
A week later we were playing the tracks with Desmond….and wow……what a breath of fresh air to get a good bass player playing bass.
A real drummer, a real bass player, me on guitar and a laptop playing a long.
“We need a keyboard/piano player”
As luck would have it, a few months before the magical experience above, I had met up with a dude from Ableton who explained me something about the software since I needed to start teaching students in a DAW that could run on as well MAC as Windows…..something Logic does
not (MAC only).
This dude, Maurits, told me he played keys, went to a conservatory I got kicked off of and well…..we just hit it off. Maurits joined the rehearsals and that was the final piece! Greenwood was born. Eventually we started talking about needing a cliche sitcom tune.
“Like Alf!’ Maurits started playing, and that is how he created a track that we eventually made our own in
“Oh Alf!” So again, that track was originally written by Maurits, we just added our parts.
Time to turn Georgy’s demo’s into music made by humans! I called my old pall Ric Brand if he would want to help out recording the stuff and he got on board. Franky nailed it in one takes. Dessmond probably did as well from his home. I recorded the guitars in my home studio (Bias FX
and Fortin Cory Wong) while programming horns, (chiptune) synths and pads. Maurits started recording his parts but unfortunately wasn’t able to add all his parts to the album due to a wrist
injury.
The medicine? Take a long rest. Eventually we all agreed that the album needed to be finished and so that’s why he isn’t playing keys on all the tracks. So I used some of the keys I wrote/programmed for the demos, kicked them over to Ric and BOOM! Everything was recorded.
Ric then started mixing all our noodling around. He nailed the mix, kicked the mixes back over to me so I could do some mastering.
With the mastered tracks done, the album was done and we had alien visitors that night. Totally unrelated, but since you are still reading this I thought it would be a cool sidetstory for your brain.
Picture those funky grey ‘beings’ listening to this album, in that silver ufo, on their way back to… well.. MELMAC….full circle.
Where was I?
Oh yeah “BOOM” Funky Forest.
