when we were bitty little
daddy brought home some gloves
johnny, frankie put these on
let’s go out to the front yard
come on lace ‘em up
let’s shoot the fair one
me & frankie we tried to do him proud
me & frankie we threw hands for his love
he’d sit down on the steps
& he’d light up a smoke
pull the tab from his can
still in his work clothes
it was dusk
the end of summer
hot as a motherfucker
i beat on my brother
& my brother beat me back
dad would laugh when we cried
‘til he cried
then we’d laugh
frankie very rarely fought nice
he could kick like a mule
he would bite
he wouldn’t lay down
he’d dance all damn night
