Crocus by Walker Farrell

Ceremony of Seasons continues its quest to celebrate both the spiritual nature of seasonal change and the remarkable creativity of its home base (Asheville, North Carolina) through the "Ritual of Senses" series. The brain child of Tim Gormley, the series is a curated reproduction of his long-standing personal ritual of intentionally pairing an album and a beverage in a way that gives both art forms the thoughtful consideration they deserve. In addition to running Ceremony of Seasons, Tim is a co-founder/owner of an Asheville based brewery, winery and music venue.

Ceremony of Seasons works exclusively with Asheville based musicians. The musicians are asked to create music that celebrates the season in which the album will be released. To borrow from wine industry terminology, this is sonic terroir.

The art Tim is most inspired by is abstract and thought provoking, and that drives not only the sonic theme of the label, but also the beverage pairing component. Within his VISUALS Wine brand, he produces mutated, aromatized, botanical wines that he dubs "Abstractions of Earth". These aperitif style wines have the potential to be infused with nearly infinite combinations of sugars, fruits, spices, herbs, nuts, flowers, etc...and thus they make an excellent canvas for collaboration. The wines that pair with each release are produced with direct inspiration and input from the musician.

The title of Walker Farrell's forthcoming album, "Crocus", provided the inspiration for the spring aperitif wine, which features saffron, the world's most expensive spice, derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus flower.

Walker Farrell’s formative music experience was nightly sessions in bed with a cassette tape of Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, provided by his parents as a way to keep his chronically insomniac mind occupied. The many inventive melodic lines on the tape, especially John Coltrane’s bold entrance on “So What,” soundtracked imaginary movies in his head. With Crocus, Walker scores a new imaginary film, a sonic depiction of the first 24 hours of spring as experienced by a 1/8” tall garden dweller. Taking structural, musical, and spiritual guidance from many different moments in the artistic life of John Coltrane, Crocus is a celebration of the complexity and beauty of life as it boldly returns to triumph over the death and desolation of winter.
