The living room was quiet except for the machine. My nephew and I sat on the floor with the Circuit Tracks between us, the little pads glowing green and red.

We didn’t have the words. His language wasn’t mine, and mine wasn't his. Most of the time we just looked at each other and shrugged. But then he’d reach out and tap a beat, and I’d twist a knob to make it ring. We built things out of nothing, low thumps and sharp clicks that filled up the silence where the talking should have been.

It was a strange way for a man to talk to his nephew, but we understood each other well enough. We’d finish a sequence and he’d look up and grin, and I’d nod. That was plenty.

I looked at him then and felt something pull at my chest. A sharp, quiet ache. You know the feeling. You’re sitting there in the middle of a moment, and you already know you’re going to miss it later. You’re missing it while it’s still happening.

We spent the whole afternoon like that, two people sitting in the light, letting the machine say the things we couldn't.
