Slodj by Burlin Mud

Burlin Mud is a project started by Roy Culbertson and still active today in Vienna Austria. The idea was to have me play drums and Chris Boron to play trumpet and electronics. But it turned into an experimental electronics and acoustics band with a whiff of strange spirituality. Our first shows we had a crock pot full of river mud where we cooked to give a fresh smell of mud to add to the environment to our shows. This album wasn't our first or even our 2nd, but it is unique. The three of us went to the Culbertson family fishing cabin (which is now washed away from floods) a rustic place with no plumbing and a wood burning stove to record an album. The cabin was known as the Piney Lodge which is set by the Piney River in Missouri. To the Culbersons this is a majestic place where many of their friends and extended family over the years have partaken in its beauty and played on the grounds and in the river. We brought everything we had and had a multi-track digital recorder with us. But this was not the product of that endeavor even though we spent hours recording in the cabin none of it was ever released. But not was all lost. Roy had a tricked shoebox style cassette recorder where he removed the erase head so one can rerecord over existing sounds over and over. I had recorded boiling water from somewhere as a performance tape loop thing, but we threw it in the tricked cassette recorder and recorded us hiking around the woods and around the cabin. We played various acoustics (sometimes sticks and rocks) and used our voices to make howls and chants to create what I think is a noise masterpiece. This is what came of it and we released it at a show we did at Apop records in 2013 when we opened for Trancers, Raglani, and Bitchin Bajas. Each tape had a different Rorschach Inkblot on delicate greenish tracing paper. "Slodj" I believe was a abstract way to say "Lodge" after Piney Lodge I'm sure. This is a Cumsun release which is my infrequent ongoing release cassette label. Think we made 25 of these.

This is an archival site for past musical adventures I personally explored as a solo artist or collaboratory with my friends. Some here had been released in physical format only till now, some never seen the light of day. Since 1988.
